What is USSD and how does it differ from SMS
USSD is a protocol for exchanging short messages in a cellular network. The technology has much in common with regular SMS, except that the messages are instantaneous, meaning they arrive faster, within 2-4 seconds. Additionally, the text is not stored on the user's SIM card or on the cellular operator's side.
Other differences between USSD and SMS:
- The USSD service is used to communicate with the operator's (or bank's) service application, while SMS is used to communicate between two subscribers.
- USSD responses are only displayed on the phone screen and are not stored on the device.
- USSD is not charged by the operator, which is a significant advantage, especially when roaming.
- SMS is dialed in the "Messages" app on a smartphone, while the USSD command is dialed in the call app, like a regular phone number, and sent by pressing the call button.
From a technical standpoint, USSD is a built-in feature of GSM cellular networks, supported by all GSM-standard phones. The option becomes active from the moment the SIM card is activated and does not require the installation of additional applications.
How USSD Works
There are 2 types of USSD messages:
- USSD command. A request from the user sent to the operator in the form of a code containing the symbols * and #, as well as digits corresponding to a specific command. Example — *100#. Subsequent messages to the operator typically contain a digit or one or two words depending on the command to be sent.
- USSD response. A message from the operator in response to a request, which is displayed on the phone screen for a certain period. The user always has the choice to respond to the message or ignore it.
- Receiving reference information about connected services, balance status, service conditions, and more.
- Delivery of one-time passwords — the code is displayed on the screen and is not stored in the phone's memory.
- Selecting tariff plans, activating-deactivating services, managing tariffs.
- Changing the PIN and PUK codes of the SIM card.
- Performing banking operations: transferring money to another subscriber, topping up the mobile phone balance, payments to providers in Казань, etc.
It is worth noting USSD PUSH — service messages that pop up in the "shade" of the smartphone's main screen. USSD is often used in combination with other methods of interaction. To manage even a single option, the client has the choice to dial a USSD command, call customer support, or send an SMS. USSD messaging can have up to 10 steps, within which a well-thought-out menu of questions and answers can be created automatically. Each short number in the format *100# has its own USSD menu.
